To A Few Who Might Be Curious . . . And “American Blues”
The seemingly ambitious release of four “Rod Coleman” solo albums in the last two years has nothing to do with any kind of aspirations to perform as a solo artist, nor any issues or artistic differences with my musical family that is The Groovebirds. Speaking for myself, I hope to continue making and releasing albums with Phil Carroll and Tracy Coleman for as long as we are able; and indeed these four “Rod Coleman” releases were actually assembled while I was working with Tracy and Phil via file sharing to release the seventh album by The Groovebirds, "It Was Another Time.”
For what its worth, my solo albums were more about passing time in Eastern Oregon, and (perhaps) created for closure. They were drawn primarily from music that I had put on the shelf over many years. Some of those songs could just as easily have been released by The Groovebirds. Indeed, at least one of the works I had planned to release on a solo effort was included on “It Was Another Time.”
As a band, The Groovebirds have never excluded each other's proposed contributions to our albums, even when a given viewpoint on a subject does not square with our own. That aspect of our albums is obvious to anyone who knows us. So I have always felt free to contribute whatever I happen to be working on to our projects; and these solo works would not, in my mind, necessarily be out of bounds.
The possible exception would be the material I have included on “American Blues,” which reflects some rather personal views of American life and politics that I thought might draw unfair criticism toward my bandmates. Currently, our country is divided and in the mood for war; and the songs on this particular album allude to reconciliation and take shots at both sides of the political spectrum. Moreover, two of them touch on subjects we would prefer to ignore in a climate where people seem to increasingly gravitate toward “good-time” music that helps them to forget their struggles.
“Leftovers!”
A third collection of songs by Rod Coleman from the Groovebirds Music “Shelf” has been released, and is currently available through most streaming platforms worldwide.
Like the first two albums released from this archive, “Leftovers” is a selection of tunes that were (mostly) written in the early 1990s, and later recorded and enhanced in home studios between 2018 and 2026.

“Papa Ride's Greatest Hits”
The second album of songs by Rod Coleman from the Groovebirds Music “Shelf” was “Papa Ride's Greatest Hits.” This album was released on November 6, 2025 and includes eight songs written in the early 1990s that were later recorded and/or remixed in Groovebirds Music home studios between 2018 and 2025. A limited number of compact discs are available at A Few Things Musical.
